Miss Judy Atwell reached her 21st year a few weeks ago and, to celebrate, was given a party. About 60 guests were entertained at the home of her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. T. Sten, of Claremont, where, alter a buffet tea, the young people danced to the tune of the West Side Jazz Group. Enthusiastic about dress designing, and studying art at Perth Technical College with a view to making designing a career, Miss Atwell has been dressmaking at her home in Nedlands for the last 12 months. She loves tennis and swimming, and is “crazy” about music-the boogie-Woogie variety, which, she said, she would give anything to be able to play.

BATTLE OF THE JAZZ BANDS
Wednesday 28th May 1952 – Jazz At The Capitol Lena Horne. Spike Jones. Mills Brothers. Harry Eddison. Lester Young. Ella Fitzgerald. Ray Brown . . . They’re just a few big names of modern music in the long list of acquaintances claimed by Ron Stanton, now in Perth. Ron, a Sydneysider, is a genuine young man of music. American tours have given him an intimate knowledge of techniques over there — and he’s bringing them to Perth. Particularly impressed with the annual festival Jazz at the Philharmonic, he has formed a “leaders group” in Perth for Jazz at the Capitol. Group includes Harry Bluck, Sammy Sharp, Cliff Adam, Bill Kirkham, John Mowson, Charlie Thompson and Ron Stanton himself. Program— at the Capitol on Wednesday night— will also include the “name bands” of Perth, Chung Doo, Stanton’s sextet and Jack Harrison’s quartette. Wednesday 28th May 1952 – Jazz At The Capitol – Only two in it and both were winners A “Jazz Battle” in the capitol theatre last night between the West Coast Dixielanders and the West Side Jazz Group resulted in a draw and each side received a cup. The theatre was filled with a near capacity crowd of 2500 and judging in the contest was by audience acclamation. Each side played two numbers, and after each offering the audience applauded for about five minutes. The event was organised by drummer Ron Stanton of the Edgley and Dawe Company, and the offering at the concert ranged from Dixieland and swing numbers to “sugar coated be-bop”. Assisting artists included Chinese vocalist Chung Doo, blind singer Phyllis Frost, Jack Harrison’s Quartette and the Ron Stanton sextet.
