The Soldiers’ Institute / Government Gardens.
The original Soldiers’ Institute was a central Perth headquarters and memorial building for Western Australian veterans, opened by Governor Sir Harry Barron on October 22, 1916.
It stood in the Government Gardens (now known as Stirling Gardens) along St George’s Terrace in Perth. The original location now forms part of the site occupied by Council House on St George’s Terrace. Built through public donations and soldiers’ initiatives, it served as a social and organizational hub for returned servicemen, hosting events like the R.S.L. band’s weekly euchre parties before organizations later transitioned to other venues.
It was replaced by ANZAC House on the St Georges Terrace site (corner of Irwan Street) in 1934.
