The ABC operates multiple television channels, national and regional radio networks, and digital platforms across Australia.

Radio station 6WF (Wesfarmers) opened at 569 Wellington Street in June 1924.

The Australian Broadcasting Company was nationalised by the Commonwealth Government, following a Royal Commission in 1927 and in 1929 moved to the studios on the corner of Hay and Milligan Streets.

The Australian Broadcasting Commission was founded in 1932, and 6WF became part of the national network.

It was officially launched on July 1, 1932, as the Australian Broadcasting Commission, replacing a private syndicate to serve as Australia’s national public broadcaster. Modelled after the BBC, it began as a single radio service funded by listener licence fees before shifting to direct government funding.  The ABC Act was passed, and broadcasts commenced with an address by announcer Conrad Charlton.

Broadcast House was in St George’s Terrace on the spot where Council House stand today.

Television broadcasting officially began in Sydney on November 5 1956, led by prime minister Robert Menzies.

A.B.C. 191 Adelaide Terrace Perth.

The ABC studio complex in Adelaide Terrace, Perth, began opening in phases starting in 1959 for radio, with the television facilities and official complex fully opening on May 7, 1960.

Construction on the site at 191 Adelaide Terrace started in 1958. Radio operations moved into the new buildings in 1959, and ABW Channel 2 officially launched from the location on May 7, 1960.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation – The organization was renamed the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1983 under new legislation that reconfirmed its editorial independence. In 1995, digital and online operations began with the launch of the ABC’s first website.

The site served as the home of Western Australia’s public broadcaster until the ABC relocated to Fielder Street in East Perth in 2005.
