Thomas Shafto built a hotel and theatre in a former wood yard bounded by Stirling, James and Beaufort Streets in 1904 and called them both “Shaftesbury”.
It was Perth’s home of vaudeville, hosting plays, boxing, wrestling, silent films and pantomime.
It was famous for its comedians, jugglers, magicians and dancing girls.
It went through several name changes: Luxor, briefly Ritz, Hollywood and Tivoli.
When the Tivoli Theatre closed in 1949 it became a skating rink and then converted to a dance hall called Canterbury Court Ballroom opening on 17th September 1955.
The Canterbury Court Ballroom and the multi-story car park were demolished in 1991.
