Person
MANN, Jim
James Raymond Mann was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England where his initial contact with brass playing and music generally was within the rich tradition of Salvation Army brass banding. He came to Australia in 1964 having trained to be a chef and after numerous career changes was introduced to Tony Federici, the then Principal Trombone with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, who guided him into orchestral playing through many long, interesting and intense sessions.
He joined the WASO in 1974 and was appointed Principal in 1983 after the untimely death of his colleague George Powers.
