CHAYTER, Richard Henry

CHAYTER

from Cater = English – occupational name for the buyer of provisions for a large household from the Anglo Norman French acatour from the Late Latin acceptator, to accept, to receive.

ROBERT JOHN CHAYTER  married MARY JANE STOTHART. When Richard Henry Chayter was born on 7 February 1880 in Queensland, his father, Robert, was 34 and his mother, Mary, was 26.

STODDARD

Mary Jane Stoddard born 14th Nov 1853, was the 2nd child of Matthew and Mary Ann Stothard, born in Sunderland.  With her mother and father and other members of the family she moved to London (Poplar) her father having been invited by Mr Walker of the Upper Globe Dry Dock and Lavender Yard, Rotherhithe, to manage the Upper Globe Dock in about 1871.

Mary Jane, known to all as Jane, married William Taylor in the Parish Church of St Anne (a lovely Hawkesmore church) in 1875.  It would appear that with others, they obtained three collier brigs and sailed to Australia, landing at Newcastle, NSW.  They, over a period of time traded along the coast, built a small shipbuilding yard and an inn.  Apparently they were reasonably successful in all that they did.  Unfortunately Jane and William’s marriage didn’t prosper.  I don’t know if they divorced, but William Taylor did have a second marriage.

The family went from Newcastle, NSW and established thenselves in Townsville, North Queensland, where they carried on in the ship building industry – small vessels, and the ship yard only closing down quite recently – towards the end of the 20th century.  An attempt to preserve the yard was made by local societies, but as soon as the new owners of the site heard of it, they bought in the bulldozers and destroyed the area.

ADAMS

When Mary Adams was born on 12 April 1882 in Brisbane, Queensland, her father, William, was 39, and her mother, Emma, was 34.

She married Richard Henry Chayter on 2 May 1906 in Queensland.

They had four children in 13 years.

She died on 12 September 1944 in her hometown at the age of 62, and was buried there.
